EXPERIENCING LAWN FUNGUS?

Prevention is the best treatment against lawn fungus. You can also apply various fungicide lawn treatments, both chemical and organic to aid your lawn in its efforts to fight back against the disease.

HERE ARE COMMON TYPES OF CENTRAL TEXAS LAWN FUNGUS:
brown patch, leaf spot, helminthosporium, take-all patch, red threads, gray splotches and orange-red powder.

TIPS ON HOW TO PREVENT FUNGUS:

1.) WATER AT THE RIGHT TIME OF DAY
Most fungi, including brown patch and helminth, thrive in moist conditions. Watering the proper amount at the right time of day can set your lawn up for success.
-Watering early morning between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM is ideal, but anytime between midnight and 9:00 AM is preferred.  This allows the lawn to take in all the water throughout the day before the heat sets in.
-We choose this window of time because dew is naturally created every night as temperatures drop, typically after midnight. Many large lawns with numerous irrigation zones need more time to get watering completed before temperatures begin to rise after sunrise, so our team recommends starting after midnight.
-Evening lawn watering, before midnight, keeps the lawn from fulling drying out which can cause disease.

2.) PREVENT FUNGUS FROM SPREADING OUT
Avoid walking over the fungus and clean your yard tools after they touch the infected area.

3.) FEED YOUR LAWN
A healthy lawn, with nutrients and a healthy root system, will be better equipped to fight off and prevent fungus. When a lawn is weak, it is easier to catch a fungal disease and harder to fight it off.

4.) KEEP YOUR LAWN AT A GOOD HEIGHT
Tall, mature grass is stronger and stands a better chance of fighting back against disease.

5.) MULCH LEAVES INTO YOUR LAWN DURING FALL
Instead of allowing the leaves to pile up, remove them completely or use your lawnmower to mulch them into the grass.

6.) TOP- DRESS YOUR YARD TO IMPROVE THE SOIL QUALITY.
Topdressing is a layer of nutritional, well-draining growing medium. The topdressing will improve the soil’s ability to drain, thereby fighting fungi!

Many fungal diseases go away on their own with proper lawn maintenance. Gray snow mold usually goes away once temperatures reach above 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius), especially if the temperatures climb quickly. Likewise, a red thread usually disappears by summer, when the weather heats up and dries out. Even though these diseases are unsightly, they do not always mean immediate death for your lawn.

If you think your lawn is experiencing any of these types of fungus, we can help you determine which type of fungus your lawn has and which chemical can take care of it best before purchasing and applying a fungicide lawn treatment.

EMERALD LAWNS will gladly help you prevent, treat and fertilize your lawn so you can enjoy a lawn you love.
