What Winter Weather Could Mean for Your Lawn and Landscape

This winter brought extended cold and repeated freeze-thaw conditions to many parts of Texas. Even in areas that usually experience milder winters, that kind of weather can sometimes affect how lawns, trees, and shrubs recover as spring gets underway.

As temperatures begin to rise, some effects of winter stress may start to show more clearly across the landscape. In many cases, that does not mean something is seriously wrong. It may simply mean your property needs a little more time to fully wake up and rebound.

Here are a few things homeowners may notice this spring.

Lawn in Dormancy

Some lawns may wake up slowly

Warm-season grasses common in Texas, including Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine, and Centipede, naturally go dormant during colder months. After a winter with prolonged freezes or repeated temperature swings, some lawns may take longer to green up evenly.

You may notice:

  • Slower green-up in certain areas
  • Thin or patchy sections
  • Uneven recovery across the lawn
  • Signs of stress as active growth begins

In some cases, cold-related damage may not become fully visible until later in the spring as the lawn starts growing again.

Trees and shrubs may recover gradually

Lawns are not the only part of the landscape that can feel the effects of a colder winter. Trees and ornamental shrubs, especially younger plantings, broadleaf evergreens, and tropical varieties, may also show signs of stress as the season progresses.

That can include:

  • Browning on leaves

  • Burned or damaged branch tips
  • Delayed budding or slower leaf-out
  • Reduced flowering
  • Gradual signs of stress as plants resume growth

These symptoms do not always appear all at once. Some may become more noticeable over time as spring continues.

Why winter stress can take time to appear

One of the challenging things about weather-related stress is that it is not always immediate. A lawn or shrub may look fine at first, only for signs of winter injury to appear later as warmer temperatures return and growth resumes.

Extreme or prolonged weather conditions are environmental factors that can impact plant health even when a property has been properly maintained. While professional lawn and landscape care plays an important role in supporting healthy growth, freeze damage, winter stress, and related setbacks are not always fully preventable through standard maintenance alone.

Round 1 Lawn Application

What Emerald Lawns will be watching this spring

As spring continues, our team will be keeping a close eye on how lawns and landscapes recover. We will be monitoring recovery progress, adjusting treatment timing as needed, and watching for secondary stress factors that can sometimes follow winter weather, including disease or insect pressure.

If areas of concern become more noticeable over time, we can take a closer look and provide recommendations based on what your property may need. That may include:

  • Treatment recommendations
  • Timing adjustments
  • Pruning guidance
  • Aeration suggestions, where applicable
  • Other next steps to help support recovery

What homeowners should keep an eye on

As your lawn and landscape move into spring, it can be helpful to monitor how things progress over the next few weeks. Some recovery may simply take time, but it is worth watching for:

  • Slower or uneven green-up
  • Thin or patchy lawn areas
  • Browning on leaves or branch tips
  • Signs of stress as plants begin active growth

We're here to help

The good news is that many lawns and landscapes will continue to improve as the weather warms and active growth picks up. Our goal is to help position your property for the strongest possible rebound this season.
